   A C style header file used by Clipper.

 CHK 
   These are lost allocation units which have been converted into files 
   by the DOS CHKDSK program.

   Multi-image PCX files. This format is a multi-page format for PCX files, 
   generally generated by fax software. For instance, Intel's fax software 
   produces DCX files.

   Used for storing Definitions or Default Parameters by various 
   applications.

   Demonstration file 

 DES      
   Description file 

 DFM 
   Borland Delphi file.

 DGI 
   DigiPics produced by Digital Vision. These files are usually about 
   64 Kbytes in size and need special programs like TURBODGI to view.
   DigiPics files also come with COM extension. See COM

 DHP 
   Dr. Halo PIC files.

 DIB     Device Independent Bitmap
   DIBs are of the following types:
         1. OS/2    RGB encoded
         2. Windows RGB encoded
         3. Windows RLE encoded

 DIC     DICtionary   [Genereic]
   Used by various applications, like word processors, to store dictionary
   data. See also DCT.

 DIZ     Description In Zip 
   Mostly found in zipped software distributions via anonymous FTP sites.
   Each zip file includes one special file (usually FILE_ID.DIZ) which
   decribes the content of that particular zipped file.

 DL     (D)avide Tome' and (L)uca De Gregori -- the copyright owners
   of this file format. Used for movie/animated clips. MOst DLs loop forever.
   Originated in Italy. 

 DLL    Dynamic Linked Libraries
   These files contain sub-routines which are linked or invoked by other
   executable programs during runtime.

   AutoCAD Exchange Format. This format is used for exchanging AutoCAD and 
   other CAD system files. In contrast the AutoCAD native (DWG) format is 
   proprietary and constantly changing whereas the DXF format is published
   and relatively stable.

   Encoded file.

 EPS    Encapsulated PostScript
   These are Postscript language files and are created for Postscript
   printers.
   EPSs are of the following types:

   originated on the Amiga with Ventura. Produced by GEM Draw program.

 GDM
   "Bells,Whistles and Sound Boards" internal module format 

 GIF    Graphic Interchange Format
   A compressed picture format. Introduced by Compuserve for transmitting 
   graphic files over networks. The LZW compression algorithm used in a GIF
   image is patented by Unisys Corp and, currently is, the bone of contention 
   between Unisys & software developers.
   Most suitable for images with line-art graphics and solid colors. 
   GIFs are of the following types:
         1. Interlaced
         2. Non-Interlaced
         3. Animated
   Following are the versions till date:
         -> 87a Interlaced     -- this type is rare
         -> 87a Non-Interlaced
         -> 89a Interlaced 
         -> 89a Non-Interlaced

   The IMG format was originally designed for the Atari computers, then was
   introduced to the PC world with several GEM-based products, like 
   Ventura Publisher, etc.

   Index file 

 INF    [Generic] 
   Information file for applications.

 INI
   File containing the initial configuration data for a given software 
     package. Mostly found in Microsoft Windows environment.

 IT       Impulse Tracker
   Impulse Tracker module music files.

 JAV
   JavaScript file

 JNK      [Generic]

 JPG      Joint Photographic experts Group
   A JPEG file contains a compressed picture, mostly real life photographs. 
   This compression is a "lossy" compression i.e. some details of the original
   image is lost during the compression process. 
   JPEG is pronounced as "jay-peg". (Huffman compressed)

 KBD
   Key map files for Procomm

 KDC
   KDC files are the native image format of DC-40 and DC-50 Kodak cameras.

 KIZ 
   These are Kodak Postcard files. They contain uuencoded HTML text and JPEG 
   images.

   Mandelbrot for Windows images, a package from Cerious Software.

   [1] The MOD format is for music files and originated from the COMMODORE 
   AMIGA computer. This format is a collection of sample data (similar to 
   the WAVE format) and a description of how to play these (similar to 
   the MIDI format). Some also call it as Digital Module Music.
   [2] Eudora MODem script file

 MOV
   Audio-Video format introduced by Apple for Macintosh. Now also available
   on the IBM PC. QuickTime for Windows is needed to view MOV files.

 MPE 
   MPEG video

 MPG        Motion Pictures expert Group
   A compressed format for video and audio. Promulgated by the Motion
   Pictures Expert Group (MPEG).

 MPR

   Checksum files created by MS Virus Scan program

 MSG 
   Program Message. Also generic extension for any text data file.

   This is a proprietary format developed by Kodak for photographic images.
   They are generally distributed on CD-ROMs only, due to their extremely 
   large size. They can be loaded at different resolutions.

   Images files produced by PC Rockland. They are usually large pictures.

   An image format developed by Zsoft for its PC Paintbrush program.

   Sun Unix Raster Image files. 
   Two types:
     colour-mapped (256 colours) or truecolor

     Type 1 (Modern Style)	Sun Microsystems 							
 RAW
   Raw file format. Un-encoded pixel date. Can be Raw Grayscale or RGB format
   like:
      8-bit grayscale
      16-bit grayscale (Intel or Motorola byte order)
      24-bit RGB (RGB or BGR order)
      32-bit RGBA (RGBA, ARGB, BGRA or ABGR order)

 REC     RECorder

   Commonly found with MS Windows system.

 REP     REPly
   A reply packet as per the QWK mail format. Used by BBS softwares like
   BlueWave.
   e.g. _COBWEB_.REP    where _COBWEB_ is the name of the BBS for which this
   reply packet is meant.

   Arbitrary extension to indicate a root directory image.
