ŻŪŪŪŽ SO, YOU HAVE BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER!?
žžžžž
1. Check the computer's specification against what you had asked for.
Quite often there is a difference between what had been ordered and
what had been delivered! A sort of "many a slip betwixt the cup and
the lip". First compare your order copy with the invoice then compare
the invoice with physical computer. Do the comparision component by
component and by their make.
2. Use a good diagnostic program, like QAPlus or AMIDiags to check.
3. Put the system on continuous test cycle for 48 to 72 hours. Most of
the diagnostic programs like QAPlus have an option for this kind of
requirement.
This continuous test will throughly test the system and uncover any
components which might be "marginal" specially hard drives, monitor
and the SMPS (power supply).
NOTE: If possible withhold a part of the payment till the completion
of this test, specially if you are a small, single time client
(from the vendor's point of view).
4. Tune up the CMOS settings. Usually the default settings are not
optimal. Get some external help if need be, like the friendly
neighbourhood computer geek...:).
5. Some "high risk" components -
* CPU - be careful about the DX, SX and overdrive confusion
* Cache - There are a lot of motherboards with "dummy" cache chips.
* Video RAM
* Add-on cards - 32 bit versus 16 bit
* Hard drive capacity - actual size and how much you really get to
use.

ŻŪŪŪŽ HOW TO PUT OFF YOUR COMPUTER
žžžžž
1) Always quit the current application you are running especially windows
2) Soft boot the system by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL
3) Then put off the power switch.
Soft booting forces the system to write any updated data in the RAM to
the hard drive. This is very important if you are using any disk caching
software like SMARTDRV, NWCACHE, etc or using any disk compression utility
like DoubleSpace, Stacker, etc.
In case you are running Windows 95 and above or a Unix like multitasking,
multiuser system then follow the shutdown procedure religiously.

ŻŪŪŪŽ CPT and ACPT

### WARNING : This tip is for adventurous folks or who don't mind buying ###
### a new system once in a while. ###
Whenever you have any hardware problems then do this before calling the
service people. Open the computer and press all the cards, socket mounted
IC chips, connecters and anything else which joined together by mechanical
means. This is known as CPT - Chip Pressing Technology :). And this is mostly
what a service chap will do and charge you for your troubles. This
would take care of at least 90% of all types of computer hardware problems.
If this does not work then take out the cards, clean the edge connectors and
insert them back. Prise loose the IC chips with a small flat screwdriver
and press them back onto their mounts. Take out the cable connectors, clean
and put them back.
For cleaning use a cotton wad or swab dipped in PROPYL ALCOHOL. This method
is known as ACPT - Advanced CPT :)) and will cover another 5% of all hardware
problems.
After all this if the problem does not go away, well, then it is high time
to call a service guy because your computer does have a serious malfunction.
And off course do check for viruses, software problems, hard drive data
corruption, power plug, fuse, etc before doing all the above.
Otherwise you might feel darned silly to discover that you had not plugged in
the system or had the monitor brightness turned to zero !
